If a rhinestone transfer or hot-fix stone does not stay on, the most common cause is the wrong heat press temperature or pressing time. This guide gives you the numbers that work across the fabrics we see most: cotton, polyester, nylon and blends.

Step-by-step for heat press users
- Pre-press the garment for 3-5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
- Place the transfer stone-side down on the fabric.
- Press at 315-330°F for 30 seconds with firm pressure.
- Wait 3-5 minutes for the stones to cool completely.
- Peel the carrier film slowly from a corner. If stones stick to the film, press again for 5-10 seconds.
Using a household iron
Home irons heat unevenly and cannot hold pressure like a press. Set the iron to cotton, turn steam off, and press each section for 10-15 seconds with as much weight as you can apply. Do not slide the iron - lift and press. Test on a scrap piece of the same fabric first.
Temperature by fabric
- Cotton and cotton blends: 315-330°F is safe and gives the strongest bond.
- Polyester: use 290-300°F and 25-30 seconds with a Teflon sheet or parchment between the film and the heat source to avoid scorching.
- Nylon and stretch fabrics: lowest safe heat (around 280-290°F) and always test first - nylon melts easily.
- Spandex dancewear: test on a swatch, use medium pressure and avoid over-pressing the same spot.
Common mistakes
- Peeling too early: hot glue is still soft; wait for it to cool fully.
- Steam on: moisture stops the glue from bonding.
- Too little pressure: the stones need firm contact with the fabric, not just heat.
- Skipping the pre-press: wrinkles and moisture create weak spots.
