Why Do Rhinestones Fall Off? 4 Causes and How to Prevent Them

"Why do my rhinestones keep falling off?" is the question we hear most from new buyers - and the answer is usually one of four things: heat, pressure, time, or the quality of the stone itself. Here is how to diagnose and prevent each one.

The four real causes

1. Not enough heat or time

Hot-fix glue needs 315-330°F for about 30 seconds to melt and flow into the fabric. If your press is cooler or you press for 10 seconds "because it looked done", the glue never fully activates and stones fall off in the first wash. Use the settings in our heat press temperature guide.

2. Not enough pressure

Heat alone is not enough. The stone must be pushed into the fabric while the glue is molten. Household irons work, but only with firm pressure and 10-15 seconds per section. A heat press with adjustable pressure gives the most consistent results.

3. Wrong fabric or surface

Very smooth, coated or waterproof fabrics (some nylon, vinyl, leather) do not let glue bond. Nylon also melts at rhinestone temperatures. Test on a scrap swatch before committing to a full garment.

4. Stone or glue quality

Cheap stones use thin glue layers or low-grade backing that fails after one or two washes. This is why we spot-check every batch for adhesive strength and coating durability before shipping, and back loose stones and transfers with a replacement promise if stones fall during application.

How to test before you sell

  1. Press a sample transfer onto a scrap of the exact fabric you use.
  2. Wait 24 hours, then machine wash and dry it once.
  3. Check for loose stones around edges and high-stress areas (waist, seams).
  4. If stones shift, re-press the sample at the top of the recommended range.

How to reapply fallen stones

If a few stones fall after washing, they can usually be pressed back on. Place the stone back on its spot, cover with a Teflon sheet or parchment paper, and press with a hot-fix applicator or iron for 3-5 seconds. For larger repairs, an applicator wand gives the most control.

What we do differently

StrassHub supplies factory-direct glass stones and transfers with pre-shipment quality checks. Every transfer ships with application instructions, and if stones fall off during application, we replace the sheet - no questions asked. That is the standard we hold our stock to.
